Oxford resident John Simpson is the BBC’s World Affairs Editor and host of BBC 2’s new ‘unvarnished version of the week’s global news stories’, Unspun World, who calls upon his extensive journalistic experience in his fiction. He joins us for a 2-course literary dinner when he will talk about his latest novel Our Friends in Beijing. He will reveal why he finds it so cathartic to write creatively after half a century covering some of the world’s most devastating real life conflicts, and how liberating he finds storytelling through the lens of his main character, Jon Swift, his fictional alter ego.

Our Friends in Beijing takes Swift to China to unravel myriad lines of enquiry and false trails. It touches on the period around the Tiananmen Square massacre and is described as a thriller about “truth, power, politics and friendship”.
